On Tuesday night, Dr. Jennifer McKinney delivered the annual Winifred E. Weter lecture, entitled “Sects and Gender: Resistance and Reaction to Cultural Change.” Dr. McKinney discussed the tendency of “sect-like religious organizations” to adopt more restrictive gender theologies in order to create higher tension between themselves and the larger culture. She argues that throughout Christian history, shifts in gender theology can be linked to a religious organization’s conviction to either increase or decrease separation from the culture.
Be on the lookout for the online posting of this lecture — it’s not one to miss!
Congratulations to Dr. McKinney for delivering the Weter lecture this year, and we look forward to hearing more of your work in the future!
